Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

To report an error in current or upcoming Main Page content, please add it to the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of all or part of the text in question will help.
  • Please offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones: The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 08:51 on 22 April 2023), not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not give you a faster response; it is unnecessary as this page is not protected and will in fact cause problems if used here, as this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • Done? Once an error has been fixed, rotated off the Main Page or acknowledged not to be an error, the report will be removed from this page; please check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken, as no archives are kept.
  • No chit-chat: Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the relevant article or project talk page.
  • Please respect other editors. A real person wrote the blurb or hook for which you are suggesting a fix, or a real person noticed what they honestly believe is an issue with the blurb or hook that you wrote. Everyone is interested in creating the best Main Page possible; with the compressed time frame, there is sometimes more stress and more opportunities to step on toes. Please be civil to fellow users.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, consider first attempting to fix the problem there before reporting it here if necessary. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. In addition, upcoming content is typically only protected from editing 24 hours before its scheduled appearance; in most cases, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.

Errors with "In the news"[edit]

  • SpaceX Starship - it is incorrect to say this was the first launch of Starship: it was its first fully-integrated launch (i.e. Starship and Booster) and the first one intended to reach space, but the Starship vehicle itself has flown several times previously as outlined in the high-altitude flights section of the Starship article. The entry should still be included, but needs to be qualified as the current wording is very misleading. 2A02:C7F:2CE3:4700:F4E1:539D:24BE:6186 (talk) 17:54, 21 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Yemen Stempede Change "stampede" to "crowd crush" per recent move. "At least 90 people are killed and 322 others are injured in a stampede in Sanaa, Yemen." --> "At least 90 people are killed and 322 others are injured in a crowd crush in Sanaa, Yemen."— Preceding unsigned comment added by Spy-cicle (talkcontribs) 18:01, 21 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • SpaceX Starship - the most powerful rocket ever, the text currently on the main page, sounds a bit too WP:HYPE to me. Any interest in changing this to the most powerful rocket to date? Thanks. –Novem Linguae (talk) 22:31, 21 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • SpaceX Starship - is first launched. Is the word first needed here? Could possibly be removed. –Novem Linguae (talk) 22:31, 21 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I agree with both points, especially the removal of the word "first" from both the blurb and the image caption. It is not correct to call this the first launch of the Starship (see IP comment above), and this is not the main point of the story. Note that the posted blurb was not one of those proposed in the ITN discussion, so it has no pre-established consensus.
To be specific, the suggestion is to replace the current blurb with the following: [[SpaceX Starship]], the most powerful rocket to date, is '''[[SpaceX Starship orbital test flight|launched]]''' ''(pictured)'' from Texas and explodes almost four minutes into the flight. The image caption could simply read "Launch of SpaceX Starship" unless anyone has a better suggestion. Sojourner in the earth (talk) 06:44, 22 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • SpaceX Starship The word "exploded" suggests it blew up accidentally/unintentionally, when it was a self destruct that was triggered deliberately due to a malfunction. Suggest "SpaceX Starship, the most powerful rocket ever, is first launched (pictured) from Texas and is deliberately destroyed almost four minutes into the flight after a malfunction." 331dot (talk) 08:05, 22 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Today's POTD[edit]

i feel that it would be more appropriate to set the dir parameter in the {{wide image}} template to "rtl" because i believe the scroll is meant to be read from right to left. (the article on the lantingji xu displays the scroll in this manner.) also, i think it might help to set the fourth parameter to "650px" (instead of "550px") in order to not cut off the last of the four large characters, but i am not sure if there is another reason why that width was chosen.

on a completely different note, i think the capitalization should be removed from "Even". dying (talk) 01:52, 22 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
