The usual English meanings of recent relate to events a relatively short time ago, typically days or weeks, though in some scientific usage (geology, palaeontology, astronomy) events hundreds, thousands, or even millions of years ago may be termed "recent".

  • In geological and palaeontological usage, particularly before 2000, "Recent" may be an exact synonym for Holocene, within the last 11,700 years.
