The 22nd Army Corps, (Russian: 22-й армейский корпус, romanized: 22-y Armeyskiy Korpus) is a tactical formation of the Russian Army formed in 2017 as part of the Southern Military District after the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation. It is based in Crimea and headquartered in Simferopol.[1]
In February/March 2022 the Corps was playing a leading role in the invasion of Ukraine operating in the Kherson region.[2][3]
Russian Federation[edit]
The 22nd Army Corps was formed on 1 December 2016, after the annexation of the Crimea by Russia. The corps includes units of the coastal troops of the Black Sea Fleet, and is ultimately part of the Southern Military District.[4][5][6][7]
In December 2018, the corps was awarded a 'Battle Banner' after distinguishing itself on combat missions.[5]
The current organisation of the corps as of 2021 is:
- 22nd Army Corps, HQ in Simferopol[1]
- 127th Reconnaissance Brigade[8] (status unclear as of January 2022)[9]
- 126th Gorlovskaya Coastal Defence Brigade, in Perevalnoe[6] (Reported equipped as mechanized infantry brigade, including heavy armour - T-72B3 main battle tanks)[10]
- 8th Artillery Regiment[11][12]
- Surface-to-surface missile battalion (Iskander surface-to-surface missiles) reportedly to be added in 2022[13][14]
- 1096th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment[11]
- 4th CBRN Protection Regiment[8]
