Their enclosures are made from 100% recycled aluminum, without compromising strength or finish. In so many ways, the most advanced products are the ones that make the least environmental impact.

The 100% recycled aluminum enclosures of the new MacBook Air and Mac mini are every bit as durable and beautiful as you’d expect. But standard recycled aluminum accumulates impurities each time it’s recycled. So we engineered a totally new alloy that can be recycled over and over again without losing the qualities that made it better to begin with.

The solder in the main logic board of iPhone is made with 100% recycled tin that performs every bit as well as newly mined tin. More than 40 components in iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR contain recycled plastic. And 100% of the wood fibre in Apple’s packaging comes from recycled sources or responsibly managed forests.

Using recycled tin in our devices will prevent Apple from mining almost 29,000 metric tons of tin ore in 2019.

The latest Apple products perform better than ever, even though their average energy consumption has decreased by 70% since 2008. An innovative new power supply design enables iMac Pro to consume 40% less energy in sleep mode and when turned off.1 MacBook Air with Retina display uses three times less power in sleep mode than the first generation. And the 11-inch iPad Pro is 69% more efficient than the ENERGY STAR requirement.2

Apple products are 70% more energy efficient now than they were in 2008. That’s better for you and the environment.

We thoroughly analyze the materials in Apple devices to find chemicals that could be harmful to people or the environment. And we set strict standards for what goes into the devices you use and wear. In Apple Watch, for example, we limit exposure to nickel, a metal that can cause allergic reactions.

It’s made of durable materials, supported by ongoing OS updates, and backed by a network of more than 5000 Apple-certified repair locations you can count on if something unexpected happens. Apple’s Reliability Testing Lab amplifies real-world conditions to make sure your device can take whatever the world dishes out. In durability tests, a weighted pendulum repeatedly strikes Apple Watch. In climate tests, we pit our devices against extreme heat and cold. And that’s just the beginning.

iPhone XS meets the IP68 international standard for dust and water resistance. That means it can withstand being submerged to a depth of 2 metres for up to 30 minutes. And we go beyond the standard by testing our devices with liquids like coffee, juice and soda.

iOS 12 was released in 2018 but is optimized for devices as far back as 2013. That means many of our older models can be updated with the latest features, functionality and security. So even past generations of iPhone or iPad can feel almost like new.

Apple Trade In is a simple way to exchange your old device for credit so that it can be reused by a new owner. If it isn’t eligible for credit, we’ll recycle it free of charge.3 Either way, your trade-in helps reduce the amount of materials that need to be mined from the earth. That’s a win for you and the environment.

When you trade in your device, we’ll help you wipe all your data and then we’ll evaluate the device’s condition. If it’s in good shape, it will live another life with a new owner. If it’s not, we’ll recycle it for free so that its materials can be used again. We even invented a disassembly robot called Daisy that can take apart 15 different iPhone models to recover materials other recyclers can’t — at a much higher quality.

The more devices you trade in, the more materials we can incorporate into new ones. Most of the aluminum recovered from iPhone, for example, became part of the 100% recycled aluminum enclosure of MacBook Air. And cobalt recovered from your iPhone battery is used to make brand-new batteries. To maximize the use of recycled materials in our new products, we also utilize sources outside Apple. Because the more that’s reused, the less that needs to be mined from the earth.
