Wikipedia:Requested moves
This page has an administrative backlog that requires the attention of willing administrators. This notice will be automatically removed by RMCD bot (talk) when the backlog is cleared. |
Requested moves is a process for requesting the retitling (moving) of an article, template, or project page on Wikipedia. For retitling files, categories and other items, see When not to use this page.
Please read the article titling policy and the guideline regarding primary topics before moving a page or requesting a page move.
Any autoconfirmed user can use the Move function to perform most moves (see Help:How to move a page). If you have no reason to expect a dispute concerning a move, be bold and move the page. However, it may not always be possible or desirable to do this:
- Technical reasons may prevent a move; for example, a page may already exist at the target title and require deletion, or the page may be protected from moves. See: § Requesting technical moves.
- Requests to revert recent, undiscussed, controversial moves may be made at WP:RM/TR. If the new name has not become the stable title, the undiscussed move will be reverted. If the new name has become the stable title, a requested move will be needed to determine the article's proper location.
- A title may be disputed, and discussion may be necessary to reach consensus: see § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves. The requested moves process is not mandatory, and sometimes an informal discussion at the article's talk page can help reach consensus.
- Unregistered and new (not yet autoconfirmed) users are unable to move pages.
Requests are generally processed after seven days. If consensus to move the page is reached at or after this time, a reviewer will carry out the request. If there is a consensus not to move the page, the request will be closed as "not moved". When consensus remains unclear, the request may be relisted to allow more time for consensus to develop, or the discussion may be closed as "no consensus". See Wikipedia:Requested moves/Closing instructions for more details on the process.
Wikipedia:Move review can be used to contest the outcome of a move request as long as all steps are followed. If a discussion on the closer's talk page does not resolve an issue, then a move review will evaluate the close of the move discussion to determine whether or not the contested close was reasonable and consistent with the spirit and intent of common practice, policies, and guidelines.
When not to use this page
Separate processes exist for moving certain types of pages, and for changes other than page moves:
- Making an uncontroversial move – if you can, be bold and do it yourself! If you can't, see § Requesting technical moves.
- Renaming a category – propose the move at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion.
- Renaming a stub template – propose the move at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion.
- Renaming an image or other file – see Wikipedia:Moving a page § Moving a file page.
- Moves from draft namespace or user space to article space – Unconfirmed users: add
{{subst:submit}}
to the top of the article. See Wikipedia:Articles for creation. Confirmed users: Move the page yourself. - Merging two articles – make a request at Wikipedia:Proposed mergers, or be bold and do it yourself.
- Splitting an article – make a request at Wikipedia:Proposed article splits, or be bold and do it yourself.
- Requesting that page histories be merged – list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge.
- Contesting a move request close – use the Wikipedia:Move review process.
Undiscussed moves
Autoconfirmed editors may move a page without discussion if all of the following apply:
- No article exists at the new target title;
- There has been no previous discussion about the title of the page that expressed any objection to a new title; and
- It seems unlikely that anyone would reasonably disagree with the move.
If you disagree with a prior bold move, and the new title has not been in place for a long time, you may revert the move yourself. If you cannot revert the move for technical reasons, then you may request a technical move.
Move wars are disruptive, so if you make a bold move and it is reverted, do not make the move again. Instead, follow the procedures laid out in § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves.
If you are unable to complete a move for technical reasons, you can request technical help below. This is the correct page if you tried to move a page, but you got an error message saying something like "You do not have permission to move this page, for the following reasons:..." or "The/This page could not be moved, for the following reason:..."
If you are here because you want an admin to approve of your new article or your proposed page move, you are in the wrong place.

- To list a technical request: Uncontroversial technical requests subsection and insert the following code at the bottom of the list, filling in pages and reason:
This will automatically insert a bullet and include your signature. Please do not edit the article's talk page.{{subst:RMassist|current page title|new title|reason=reason for move}}
the - If you object to a proposal listed in the uncontroversial technical requests section, please move the request to the Contested technical requests section, append a note on the request elaborating on why, and sign with ~~~~. Consider pinging the requester to let them know about the objection.
- If your technical request is contested, or if a contested request is left untouched without reply, create a requested move on the article talk and remove the request from the section here. The fastest and easiest way is to click the "discuss" button at the request, save the talk page, and remove the entry on this page.

Administrator needed
The discussion process is used for potentially controversial moves. A move is potentially controversial if either of the following applies:
- there has been any past debate about the best title for the page;
- someone could reasonably disagree with the move.
Use this process if there is any reason to believe a move would be contested. For technical move requests, such as to correct obvious typographical errors, see Requesting technical moves. The technical moves procedure can also be used for uncontroversial moves when the requested title is occupied by an existing article.
Do not create a new move request when one is already open on the same talk page. Instead, consider contributing to the open discussion if you would like to propose another alternative. Multiple closed move requests may be on the same page, but each should have a unique section heading.
Do not create a move request to rename one or more redirects. Redirects cannot be used as current titles in requested moves.
Requesting a single page move
To request a single page move, click on the "New section" (or "Add topic") tab of the talk page of the article you want moved, without adding a new subject/header, inserting this code:
{{subst:requested move|New name|reason=Place here your rationale for the proposed page name change, ideally referring to applicable naming convention policies and guidelines, and providing evidence in support where appropriate. If your reasoning includes search engine results, please prioritize searches limited to reliable sources (e.g. books, news, scholarly papers) over other web results. You don't need to add your signature at the end, as this template will do so automatically.}}
Replace New name
with the requested new name of the page (or with a simple question mark, if you want more than one possible new name to be considered). The template will automatically create the heading "Requested move 17 January 2024" and sign the post for you.
There is no need to edit the article in question. Once the above code is added to the Talk page, a bot will automatically add the following notification at the top of the affected page:
A request that this page title be changed is under discussion. Please do not move this page until the discussion is closed. |
Unlike other request processes on Wikipedia, such as Requests for comment, nominations need not be neutral. Make your point as best you can; use evidence (such as Google Ngrams and pageview statistics) and refer to applicable policies and guidelines, especially our article titling policy and the guideline on disambiguation and primary topics.
WikiProjects may subscribe to Article alerts to receive RM notifications. For example, Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Article alerts/Requested moves is transcluded to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Biography. RMCD bot notifies many of the other Wikiprojects listed on the talk page of the article to be moved to invite project members to participate in the RM discussion. Requesters should feel free to notify any other Wikiproject or noticeboard that might be interested in the move request, as long as this notification is neutral.
Single page move on a different talk page
Occasionally, a move request must be made on a talk page other than the talk page of the page to be moved. For example, a request to rename Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Resources to Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Reviewing and templates would need to take place at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Articles for creation because the talk page of the project page to be moved, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Articles for creation/Resources, is a redirect to that centralized discussion page. In this type of case, the requested move should be made using the following code:
{{subst:requested move|reason=(the reason for the page move goes here).|current1=(present title of page to be renamed)|new1=(proposed title of page)}}
The |1=
unnamed parameter is not used. The |current1=
and |new1=
parameters are used similar to multiple page moves described below.
Requesting multiple page moves
A single template may be used to request multiple related moves. On one of the talk pages of the affected pages, create a request and format it as below. A sample request for three page moves is shown here (for two page moves, omit the lines for current3 and new3). For four page moves, add lines for current4 and new4, and so on. There is no technical limit on the number of multiple move requests, but before requesting very large multi-moves, consider whether a naming convention should be changed first. Discuss that change on the talk page for the naming convention, e.g., Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (sportspeople).
To request a multiple page move, edit at the bottom of the talk page of the article you chose for your request, without adding a new header, inserting this code:
{{subst:requested move
| current1 = Current title of page 1
| new1 = New title for page 1 with the talk page hosting this discussion
| current2 = Current title of page 2
| new2 = New title for page 2
| current3 = Current title of page 3
| new3 = New title for page 3
| reason = Place here your rationale for the proposed page name change, ideally referring to applicable naming convention policies and guidelines, and providing evidence in support where appropriate. If your reasoning includes search engine results, please prioritize searches limited to reliable sources (e.g. books, news, scholarly papers) over other web results. You don't need to add your signature at the end, as this template will do so automatically.
}}
For example, to propose moving the articles Wikipedia
and Wiki
, put this template on Talk:Wikipedia
, and replace current2
with Wiki
. The discussion for all affected articles is held on the talk page of the article at page 1 (Talk:Wikipedia
). Do not sign a request with ~~~~
as the template does this automatically. Do not skip pairs of numbers.
RMCD bot automatically places a notice section on the talk page of the additional pages that are included in your request, advising that the move discussion is in progress, where it is, and that all discussion for all pages included in the request should take place at that one location.
Occasionally the discussions for significant multi-move requests may be hosted on WikiProject talk pages or other pages in Project namespace. For multi-move discussions hosted on a page which is not itself proposed to be moved, specify |current1=Current title of page 1
for the first page to move.
Request all associated moves explicitly
Please list every move that you wish to have made in your request. For example, if you wish to move Cricket (disambiguation) to Cricket because you do not believe the sport is the primary topic for the search term "Cricket", then you actually want to move two pages, both Cricket (disambiguation) and Cricket. Thus you must list proposed titles for each page affected by your request. For example, you might propose:
If a new title is not proposed for the sport, it is more difficult to achieve consensus for a new title for that article. A move request that does not show what to do with the material at its proposed target, such as:
is incomplete. Such requests may be completed as a request to decide the best new title by discussion.
- Cricket → ?
If a disambiguation page is in the way of a move, the request may be completed as proposing to add (disambiguation).

Commenting on a requested move
All editors are welcome to contribute to the discussion regarding a requested page move. There are a number of standards that Wikipedians should practice in such discussions:
- When editors recommend a course of action, they write Support or Oppose in bold text, which is done by surrounding the word with three single quotes on each side, e.g.
'''Support'''
. - Comments or recommendations are added on a new bulleted line (that is, starting with *) and signed by adding
~~~~
to the end. Responses to another editor are threaded and indented using multiple bullets. - The article itself should be reviewed before any recommendation is made; do not base recommendations solely on the information supplied by other editors. It may also help to look at the article's edit history. However, please read the earlier comments and recommendations, as well as prior move requests. They may contain relevant arguments and useful information.
- Vested interests in the article should be disclosed per Wikipedia:Conflict of interest § How to disclose a COI.
When participating, please consider the following:
- Editors should make themselves familiar with the article titling policy at Wikipedia:Article titles.
- Other important guidelines that set forth community norms for article titles include Wikipedia:Disambiguation, specific naming conventions, and the manual of style.
- The debate is not a vote; please do not make recommendations that are not sustained by arguments.
- Explain how the proposed article title meets or contravenes policy and guidelines rather than merely stating that it does so.
- Nomination already implies that the nominator supports the name change, and nominators should refrain from repeating this recommendation on a separate bulleted line.[a]
- Do not make conflicting recommendations. If you change your mind, use strike-through to retract your previous statement by enclosing it between <s> and </s> after the bullets, and de-bold the struck words, as in "•
SupportOppose".
Please remember that reasonable editors will sometimes disagree, but that arguments based in policy, guidelines, and evidence have more weight than unsupported statements. When an editor offers an argument that does not explain how the move request is consistent with policies and guidelines, a reminder to engage in constructive, on-topic discussion may be useful. On the other hand, a pattern of responding to requests with groundless opinion, proof by assertion, and ignoring content guidelines may become disruptive. If a pattern of disruptive behavior persists after efforts are made to correct the situation through dialogue, please consider using a dispute resolution process.
Closing a requested move
Any uninvolved editor in good standing may close a move request. Please read the closing instructions for information on how to close a move request. The Simple guide to closing RM discussions details how to actually close a requested move discussion.
Relisting a requested move
Relisting a discussion moves the request out of the backlog up to the current day in order to encourage further input. The decision to relist a discussion is best left to uninvolved experienced editors upon considering, but declining, to close the discussion. In general, discussions should not be relisted more than once before properly closing.[b] Users relisting a debate which has already been relisted, or relisting a debate with a substantial discussion, should write a short explanation on why they did not consider the debate sufficient to close. While there is no consensus forbidding participation in a requested move discussion after relisting it, many editors consider it an inadvisable form of supervote. If you want to relist a discussion and then participate in it, be prepared to explain why you think it was appropriate.
Relisting should be done using {{subst:RM relist}}
, which automatically includes the relister's signature, and which must be placed at the very end of the initial request after the move requester's signature (and subsequent relisters' signatures).
When a relisted discussion reaches a resolution, it may be closed at any time according to the closing instructions; there is no required length of time to wait before closing a relisted discussion.
If discussion has become stale, or it seems that discussion would benefit from more input of editors versed in the subject area, consider more widely publicizing the discussion, such as by notifying WikiProjects of the discussion using the template {{RM notification}}. Banners placed at the top of the talk page hosting the move request can often be used to identify WikiProjects suitable for notification.
Notes
- ^ A nominator making a procedural nomination with which they may not agree is free to add a bulleted line explaining their actual position. Additional detail, such as sources, may also be provided in an additional bullet point if its inclusion in the nomination statement would make the statement unwieldy. Please remember that the entire nomination statement is transcluded into the list on this page.
- ^ Despite this, discussions are occasionally relisted more than once.
- This section lists all requests filed or identified as potentially controversial which are currently under discussion.
Do not attempt to edit this list manually; a bot will automatically update the page soon after the {{subst:Requested move}} template is added to the discussion on the relevant talk page. The entry is removed automatically soon after the discussion is closed. To make a change to an entry, make the change on the linked talk page. |
This list is also available in a page-link-first format and in table format. 79 discussions have been relisted.
- (Discuss) – Pākehā settlers → European settlers in New Zealand – Per WP:COMMONNAME, WP:RECOGNIZABILITY, WP:COMMONALITY, and WP:CONSISTENT. First, elsewhere on Wikipedia we don't use Pākehā to refer to Europeans New Zealanders, we use European New Zealanders. As such, the proposed title is more consistent with our usage elsewhere. Second, readers from outside New Zealand will not recognize Pākehā; in accordance with WP:COMMONALITY and WP:RECOGNIZABILITY, and with the general principle of making Wikipedia accessible to all readers, we should use a term that is widely used in New Zealand, and is recognizable to the broader body of readers; European settlers in New Zealand, rather than Pākehā settlers. Third, the proposed title is the clear WP:COMMONNAME. This can be seen by reviewing Scholarly results since 2021: #191 sources use "Pākehā settlers" #3310 use "European settlers" in relation to New Zealand Not all results are relevant, but a manual review tells us that enough are to make the COMMONNAME obvious. Finally, MOS:TIES is overridden here by MOS:COMMONALITY, as "European settlers" is widely used in New Zealand English, as can be seen by these Google News results from the past year limited to New Zealand domains: #47 sources use "Pākehā settlers". #239 sources use "European settlers" in relation to New Zealand. Of the results for "Pākehā settlers", most are relevant, although some also use "European settlers". Of the results for "European settlers" in relation to New Zealand most are also relevant; a lower ratio than for "Pākehā settlers", but enough to establish the common name. Some true positives are excluded by the requirement that they must mention "New Zealand", which was included to limit the number of false positives, such as New Zealand sources discussing European settlers in Australia. Results that also use "Pākehā settlers" were excluded. This can be further seen by Google Trends, which shows that New Zealanders prefer to use "European settlers", and almost never use "Pākehā settlers". This doesn't only establish that the conditions for MOS:COMMONALITY to apply are met, but that the conditions for MOS:TIES to apply are not met; in New Zealand English, the most common way of referring to these people is "European settlers", not "Pākehā settlers". Battle is simply inaccurate and should be moved regardless of the target. No RS uses this term and per the events, Hamas launched a barrage of rockets, invaded the base, conducted an attack, then were killed. One-sided offensive. Not really two armies meeting on a battlefield. The pageviews graph shows that The Beekeeper (2024 film) is the primary topic at the moment, receiving many more pageviews than The Beekeeper. However, I’m conscious that this could potentially be a temporary uplift due to the film’s recent release - hence why I haven’t included a proposal to move that page in this RM. (However, such a proposal can always be made at a later date if it becomes clear that its position as the primary topic is not just temporary.) All of the links from Beekeeper (disambiguation) (barring the one to Beekeeper itself and a link in the See Also section) start with the word "The", hence why I propose moving it to the base name. - (Discuss) – State housing → State housing (New Zealand) – "State housing" is a generic phrase, not one specific to New Zealand, and should therefore redirect to the corresponding broad-concept article at public housing. Sour789 recently tried to do this move, but it was reverted by Gadfium because
other countries use the term "public housing"
. This is true in the sense that "public housing" is the more common name in the United States (or "social housing", "government housing", etc. in other countries), but not in the sense that "state housing" is a uniquely New Zealand phrase; a quick web search shows that it's also used by official bodies in Norway[4] and several US states[5][6], for instance. Alternatively, we may consider simplifying it to just "Kurdish," similar to the "Arabic" Wikipedia article, thereby sidestepping any contentious debates and maintaining a neutral stance. - (Discuss) – Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County → Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County – Per WP:COMMONNAME. Tashkurgan has been used far more often than Taxkorgan. "Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County" has only recently (since 2011) been used more commonly than "Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County", despite the latter being the official name. When adjusting the smoothing of the data to >20, "Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County" overtakes "Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County". I do not think this detail matters though because that would account for a lot of algorithmic error. Furthermore, it seems more sensical to be consistent with other articles that already have the spelling "Tashkurgan" in their names, such as the article Tashkurgan itself. "Tashkurgan" also makes more sense as an English name because the "x" in "Taxkorgan" is meant to be pronounced as "sh", a relic of a failed Uyghur transliteration system from the previous century (Uyghur New Script) and the current unofficial system for Sarikoli that borrowed from Mandarin pinyin. - (Discuss) – Seal (emblem) → Seal (device) – The current title, Seal (emblem), conjures up an image of some graphics, not of a physical imprint or tool (which are the most important meanings here). An unsuspecting reader would look here for a Presidential Seal of Turkey, not a signet ring. We are really trying to encompass three different closely related concepts: (a) the physical implement (tool, matrix, die); (b) the impression; and (c) the graphic design (emblem), which may not even exist in a "physical" manifestation. Reverting name to Seal (device) will work, because the word "device" is itself ambiguous: in colloquial English it means a tool or implement, but in heraldry (and therefore sigillography) it means a symbol or emblem. One more meaning, "a method, or trick with a particular aim" covers the purpose of the seal: authentication. The last informal proposal to move (Talk:Seal (emblem)#Name (yet again)) was unopposed, but due to previous discussions (Talk:Seal (emblem)#Recent move, Talk:Seal (emblem)#Requested move) I am initiating a potentially contested move. - (Discuss) – Ciampino–G. B. Pastine International Airport → Rome–Ciampino International Airport – Currently, we're inconsistent in naming airports in Italy. Most of them have the city name with a designation if necessary to distinguish, or at least start with the city name then the airport's name. For example: Milan Malpensa Airport, Alghero–Fertilia Airport, Bolzano Airport, Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport, Abruzzo Airport, etc. despite all technically having different official names. Changing the names would align them with what the airports are generally referred to in reliable sources we reference. For example, in the case of Rome, see even the airport's official website which refers to Rome Fiumicino and Rome Ciampino. The difference in search interest between da Vinci Airport and Rome Fiumicino is also overwhelming on Google Trends (not perfect but the margin in Italy is dramatic). That's not to mention that "Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport" is clunky (if we want to keep da Vinci, shouldn't it be Rome-Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci", "Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci" or "Rome Leonardo da Vinci"? However, I think the best solution, for both consistency with other Italian airports and common usage reasons, all of these airports should be renamed. - (Discuss) – Boeing 737 MAX groundings → Boeing 737 groundings (2019–2021) – I propose moving this page to clarify that it only relates to the grounding following the loss of the Lion Air and Ethiopian Air 737 MAX flights. The need for this page at all indicates the extrodinary circumstances of the MCAS releated accidents, investigation, and aftermath. I hope and pray that never again will it necessitate the complete loss of two flights before sufficient investigation and corrective action is taken. Keeping the current title will neccisitate maintaining a list of any future groundings and does not follow the wikipedia pattern of the "investigation, cause, aftermath" sections in the article of the accident flight. See Google Ngrams. To account for the possibility that the results are skewed by the rare Turkic language name Artush, here are Google Books search results, both searches with "China" included in the search: Artush has 2,830 results on Google Books, while Artux has 1,660. - (Discuss) – Trainspotter → Trainspotters in the United Kingdom – This title was suggested by me in a comment a while back when the article was in draft (Special:Permalink/1193456614). My comment was that the article focuses too much on the UK and that the word "trainspotter" is not exactly a UK-exclusive term, but also used globally. [11][12][13][14]. This meant that the article does not offer a WP:GLOBAL perspective (which the title may imply), and while another reviewer suggested can include more transpotter things worldwide, is already in my opinion covered under the Railfan article, hence the suggested name to make sure that readers know this article deals with the UK. - (Discuss) – Mouna Raagam 2 → Mouna Raagam 2 (Tamil TV series) – This is to disambiguate two topics: the movie and the television series. First, let's establish that "Mouna Raagam" is one of the many transliteration of the same phrase, therefore Mouna Ragam (disambiguation) exists. Other transliterations include "Mouna Ragam", "Mouna Ragaam", "Mounaragam", and "Mounaraagam". WP:SMALLDIFF may not be applicable as when I was processing the redirects of the other TV series, Mouna Raagam (TV series) and Mouna Ragam (TV series) were pointing to the same article. If we leave it as at "Mouna Raagam 2" it may potentially be confused as a sequel of the movie, which occupies the base title, Mouna Ragam. If we just indicate the disambiguator as "(TV series)", it may potentially be confused for a sequel of any of the TV series as indicated on the disambiguation page. Therefore, I arrived at "(Tamil TV series)" as the disambiguator. – robertsky (talk) 23:38, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – 2023 Israel–Hamas war → Israel–Hamas war (2023–present) – The war has now extended into 2024 for two weeks, so the current article title using only "2023" is contrary to standard naming practice on Wikipedia: we would only use "2023" as the year disambiguation if the war had ended in 2023. The standard policy for disambiguation of multi-year wars is to include the years in parentheses after the war name. Compare with War in Sudan (2023–present), Yemeni civil war (2014–present), etc. For context, there was a recent RM which ended up very complicated thanks to discussing three separate issues at once (whether to change "Israel–Hamas war" to something else, what to change the year disamguator to, and whether year disambiguation is needed at all). It was closed with the result being to retain the "Israel–Hamas war" form of the title but with no consensus as to the other topics, and there is an ongoing unofficial discussion about the title following on from that RM. This RM is intended specifically to fix the incorrect year disambiguation as soon as possible: a clearly incorrect title shouldn't be left in effect long-term on a heavily viewed page. It is intended without prejudice against any other discussions or requested moves such as regarding changing the "Israel–Hamas war" wording. - (Discuss) – Baptism of Fire → Baptism of Fire (1943 film) – There are two films with the same name (i.e. this and Baptism of Fire (1952 film)), and there is almost no traffic here. I initially was going to propose moving the dab page to the base title (which I do not oppose as an alternative), but after looking at the traffic of all pages, the novel seems to be overwhelmingly the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. (The WikiNav clickstream for the dab is not cooperating with me.) It is pretty much the only one that gets real traffic. It had a large spike for some reason last year, but after settling, it still consistently gets over 100 hits vice others that maybe get 5 or 7 on a high traffic day. 2pou (talk) 18:52, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Charles Francis Richter → Charles Richter – Charles Richter already redirects here, so there is no reason to disambiguate using his middle name. Therefore, WP:MIDDLENAME needs to be satisfied. Per the ngram and the number of Google Results (with Francis, 29,000 results; with F., 72,600 results; without either, 113,000 results), it seems "Charles Richter" is most commonly used. That, combined with WP:CONCISION, seems to make simply "Charles Richter" the best article title. Cerebral726 (talk) 15:46, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Nasheed → Nashid – per Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Arabic: "Nashid" is fully in line with the 'basic transcription' used throughout Wikipedia for Arabic article titles. What we call 'full transliteration' (which would be "Nashīd" according to Wikipedia's standards, never "Nasheed") is usually only reserved for the first mention in the lead. The origins of this accepted practice may be found in that Wikipedians generally dislike special characters in article titles (cf. WP:TITLESPECIALCHARACTERS), and so decided to dispense in article titles not only with stuff like ʿ for ʿayn but with all special formatting found in 'full transliteration'. Both the current article name and the suggested one are essentially Wiki names, I've not seen this being the actual title of a subject, which is what this article is making it out to be, but it's a start I guess. - (Discuss) – Colombo International Airport, Ratmalana → Ratmalana International Airport – I propose renaming the Wikipedia page from “Colombo International Airport, Ratmalana” to “Ratmalana International Airport.” This suggestion, while made previously, merits reconsideration due to its strong alignment with key Wikipedia naming policies, specifically Common Name (WP:COMMONNAME), Precision (WP:PRECISION), and Disambiguation (WP:DAB). * Revisiting Common Name (WP:COMMONNAME): Since previous requests, the usage of “Ratmalana International Airport” has further solidified in reliable sources. A recent review of current news articles, aviation records, and government statements consistently use “Ratmalana International Airport.” This trend strengthens the argument for aligning the article title with the most widely recognized and used name. * Enhanced Precision and Disambiguation (WP:PRECISION, WP:DAB): The potential for confusion with Bandaranaike International Airport has increased, given the latter’s growing prominence as Colombo’s main international gateway. Renaming the Ratmalana airport’s article would provide clear differentiation, thus serving the Wikipedia objective of reducing reader confusion and improving article precision. * Addressing Previous Objections: Previous attempts at this change may not have fully captured the evolving context and increasing recognition of the “Ratmalana International Airport” name. It is important to note that Wikipedia’s guidelines encourage reflecting current and accurate information, and the increasing usage of this name in authoritative and recent sources warrants a reevaluation of the page title. * Community and Reader Benefit: This change is in the best interest of the Wikipedia community and its readers. It ensures that users searching for information about Ratmalana International Airport find it easily and are not misled or confused by the current title. This aligns with Wikipedia’s goal of providing accessible, accurate, and reader-friendly content. In light of these points, and with respect to previous discussions on the matter, I strongly advocate for reconsidering this change. It not only adheres more closely to Wikipedia’s naming conventions but also better serves the needs and expectations of its global audience. 2001:708:0:19:0:0:0:13 (talk) 05:19, 4 January 2024 (UTC)— Relisting. - (Discuss) – Coin (band) → COIN (band) – This page was moved a few years ago from fully capitalising 'COIN' to its current title. The previous move cites MOS:ALLCAPS, which advises to "Avoid writing with all caps (all capital letters) [...] when they have only a stylistic function. Reduce them to title case, sentence case, or normal case, as appropriate." However, I think the key phrase here is "as appropriate". MOS:TM, which specifically applies to this page, clarifies that articles should "Follow standard English text formatting and capitalization practices, even if the trademark owner considers nonstandard formatting "official", as long as this is a style already in widespread use, rather than inventing a new one" [bolding my own]. Per the last clause, this page should fully capitalise 'COIN', which is in line with basically every other mention of the band (both official and unofficial), including every citation in this article but one (the 'one' being a dead link to iTunes). As such, this page's current title violates MOS:TM by "inventing a new [style]", as spelling the band's name with only the 'C' capitalised is used virtually nowhere except for this article. - (Discuss) – Franco-Siamese War → Franco-Siamese crisis – or Franco-Siamese conflict – Revisiting this. Having gone through Google Books results for "Franco-Siamese war", "Franco-Siamese crisis", and "Franco-Siamese conflict", it appears that "Franco-Siamese crisis" is by far the most commonly used by sources directly discussing the event, as well as contemporary ones and the history summaries presented in travel guides. Conflict comes second. In contrast, "Franco-Siamese war" was only found in passing or one-off mentions in works whose focus lay elsewhere. Here's a breakdown of the results I checked that were more directly relevant. Works that use "crisis": *Books **Shane Strate, The Lost Territories: Thailand’s History of National Humiliation **Historical Dictionary of Thailand **Pierre Brocheux, Daniel Hémery, Indochina: An Ambiguous Colonization, 1858-1954 **Jittipat Poonkham, A Genealogy of Bamboo Diplomacy: The Politics of Thai Détente with Russia and China *Contemporary sources **UK Parliamentary Debates **The Contemporary Review ** Das Staatsarchiv **The Antiquary **British and Foreign State Papers *Travel guides ** DK Eyewitness Travel Guide Thailand ** The Rough Guide to Thailand Works that use "conflict": *Books **Asian Forms of the Nation **Space and Time in Thai-Lao Relations: Borderlands in International Relations **Routledge Handbook of Southeast Asian History **Chandran Jeshurun, The Contest for Siam, 1889-1902: A Study in Diplomatic Rivalry **Journal of the Malaysian Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society *Contemporary sources **The Peacemaker and Court of Arbitration **Journal of the Manchester Geographical Society **UK Parliamentary Debates **etc. Works that use both "crisis" and "conflict" *Books **Thongchai Winichakul, Siam Mapped: A History of the Geo-Body of a Nation **Locating Southeast Asia: Geographies of Knowledge and Politics of Space **Volker Grabowsky, Regions and National Integration in Thailand, 1892-1992 **The Land Boundaries of Indochina: Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam As mentioned, I didn't find any directly relevant works among those that used "war". Personally, I slightly prefer "crisis", as "Franco-Thai conflict" sounds a bit too vague/general. (There's also one source that uses "Franco-Siamese conflict" to refer to the Siamese revolution of 1688.) Also, several of the above sources do append "of 1893" on first mention, so Franco-Siamese crisis of 1893 and Franco-Siamese conflict of 1893 are also options to consider. While "investigation" seems appropriate for the Timeline of the Bad Newz Kennels dog fighting investigation article, the title of this article should reflect the unambiguous results of that investigation - a ring was uncovered. When an investigation yields an unambiguous result, I can't see why the title of the article would say "investigation" instead of what that result was. When George Floyd's death was investigated and rules to be a murder, the resultant article title was "Murder of George Floyd," not "George Floyd death investigation." - (Discuss) – Nir Yitzhak massacre → Nir Yitzhak attack – The term "massacre" is loaded and thus WP:POVNAME. That would be ok if there was a "significant majority" of sources that called it that, but there aren't. Firstly, neither "Nir Yitzhak massacre" nor "Nir Yitzhak" appear to be proper names, so we will have to use a descriptive name, and WP:DESCRIPTORs should "be specific but neutral". Most English sources use the "attack" or "attacked" descriptor to describe the event (emphasis mine): *The Guardian: "the Leimbergs were visiting Marman, Gabriela’s sister, when Nir Yitzhak was attacked on 7 October." *BBC News: uses "7 October attacks by Hamas" to describe attacks Nir Yitzhak, Nir Oz etc. *Japan Times: "militants calmly walking through the green pathways of Beeri and other kibbutzim such as Kfar Aza, Nir Yitzhak, Nir Oz and Nirim. Hamas says 1,200 of its "fighters" attacked 50 different sites on that Saturday" *CBC News: "Gefen Sigal's mother, Clara Marman, just turned 64 when she was abducted from her home in Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak...The group had gathered for the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah and were sheltering in their safe room after the Hamas attack, texting Sigal until right before they were taken. " *USA Today "Hamas militants take hostages and pet dog in footage from October 7 attack...in Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak, Israel, on October 7." *Vatican News: "The testimony of a resident of Nir Yitzhak Kibbutz that was attacked by Hamas on 7 October and his hope for peace." - (Discuss) – Victor Daniels (weightlifter) → Victor Daniels – The subject of this three-sentence stub has the sole Wikipedia entry bearing such exact main title header. An actor who used the stage name Chief Thundercloud was purportedly born under this name, but his origins are shrouded in uncertainty and, in any event, he was never credited or known to the public as "Victor Daniels" and used the name "Victor Vasquez" in his early years. A hatnote atop the weightlifter's entry — For the actor whose birth name was "Victor Daniels", see Chief Thundercloud — would suffice if consensus decides that a hatnote is even needed. — Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 04:32, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Unnamed Tasmanian football club → Tasmanian AFL team – With the concurrent existence of both Tasmanian A-League bid and History of the Tasmanian AFL bid, the current title is not WP:PRECISE enough, especially for a team based in Australia, where "football" can mean at minimum three different sports. An argument was made on more than one occasion that this is not exclusively an "AFL team" because the franchise will also field teams in the AFLW and VFL. However, this is a moot point as both are owned and operated by the AFL, and so it's accurate to label the club an "AFL" franchise. Titles such as "San Diego MLS team", "Los Angeles NWSL team", and "Seattle NHL team" worked as placeholders because they made unambiguous the location and league the franchise belonged to. - (Discuss) – Dracula's Castle (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night) → Inverted Castle – The article is almost exclusively a discussion of the Inverted Castle. The entire Reception section is about the Inverted Castle, the Concept and creation section is almost exclusively about the Inverted Castle, and the claim in the previous discussion that it was not independently notable is strange given the fact that almost every source talks more about it than the regular castle. To me, the fact that the regular castle has only two sources that don't talk about the Inverted Castle makes the current title odd, considering that multiple sources identify the Inverted Castle as being responsible for elevating Symphony of a Night as a whole. - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 14:19, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Safavid Iran → Safavid Empire – "Safavid Empire" would be the standard naming convention for this kind of article which focuses on the political entity, its dynastic evolution, its foreign conflicts and diplomatic relations and its global national characteristics. The grammatical form "periodic adjective+country" (as in "Safavid Iran", "Napoleonic France", "Qing China", "Norman England"...) is rarely used on Wikipedia (they are usually redirects), and if it existed for independent articles would more naturally refer to a sociological article about the state of a country and its population during a certain time period (discussing demographics, economy, popular culture... almost to the complete exclusion of dynastic or diplomatic history). पाटलिपुत्र (Pataliputra) (talk) 10:16, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Rome Sentinel → Daily Sentinel (Rome, New York) – Doing this to get consensus on the target name. This newspaper changed its name to the Daily Sentinel in 2022. There are or were several other papers with that name, and Daily Sentinel is a redir to a disambiguation page. I don't think this paper has a case for being the primary usage of the name Daily Sentinel. Daily Sentinel (Rome) would be confusing, since everyone thinks of a different Rome first. Daily Sentinel (New York) has the same problem and there's also the New York Daily Sentinel to get confused with. Daily Sentinel (New York State) would imply it covers the entire state, which it doesn't. Daily Sentinel (Rome, New York) is kind of ugly but seems like the least bad option. - (Discuss) – Sagrestia Nuova (New Sacristy) → Medici Chapel – This chapel is more often called the Medici Chapel than either the New Sacristy or the Sagrestia Nuova in English-language sources; see the ngram here. It's also the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC for the first phrase, and while there are other chapels of the Medici family, in practice references to the "Medici Chapel" in sources are usually to this one, so the others aren't skewing the ngram results. The article currently at Medici Chapel is really about the museum complex of two chapels at San Lorenzo called the Medici Chapels, plural. Having an article of that scope at that title has created an ambiguity about where to concentrate coverage of the chapel designed by Michelangelo and its sculptures. - (Discuss) – Equestrian at the Summer Olympics → Equestrian events at the Summer Olympics – In ordinary English usage, equestrian is either an adjective or, when used as a noun, means a rider and not events, sports, or equestrianism. See Cambridge, OED, Collins, Merriam-Webster, dictionary.com. Some editors may be accustomed to equestrian as a noun other than 'person who rides horses'; others find equestrian in the current titles ungrammatical. But in either case, "equestrian events" is universally natural and common to English speakers of all backgrounds. (Previously discussed in a 2022 RfC, with no formal closure: "equestrian events" acceptable to the largest number of editors; consensus against "equestrianism"; "equestrian sports" also possible.) - (Discuss) – Muslim conquest of Spain → Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula – I'm posting this on behalf of Mistico Dois, who moved the page without discussion yesterday, and then self-reverted at my request. I think it's possible that a new consensus has developed since last year's discussions, although to be clear I still prefer the present title: in English-language scholarship, "Spain" is understood to include Portugal during the time period covered by this article, as it has generally been used to translate "Hispania" from Roman (and Carthaginian, for that matter) times up to the establishment of Portugal as a separate state in 1143. But without a requested move, members of interested WikiProjects may not know about the discussion. Please note that this is not intended as a discussion of whether it should be the "Muslim", "Arab", or "Umayyad" conquest, which we also argued over last year. - (Discuss) – Ab urbe condita (Livy) → History of Rome (Livy) – It's been several years since this was last discussed, and while there were one or two attempts to discuss the best title since then, they didn't really resolve the issue. Although the current title is widely used, I couldn't find any evidence that Livy ever called his history Ab Urbe Condita. Yes, it's a history of Rome from the founding of the city, but "From the Founding of the City" doesn't seem to be part of the title—not even a subtitle (Historia Romae ab Urbe Condita would make sense, but there's no evidence that it was Livy's title, and while that might strike people as a practical alternative, it's a bit wordy and translates easily). There is some suggestion that Livy called his history Annales, but that title isn't widely used to refer to Livy today. "History of Rome" seems to be the best alternative, since it describes the topic and is widely used as a title; it would need disambiguation, but so does the current title. It's certainly no less correct than Ab Urbe Condita, and unlike that, it doesn't give readers the false impression that it's what Livy called his work. P Aculeius (talk) 19:00, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
- (Discuss) – Holocaust victims → Victims of Nazi Germany – As per the discussion at "Definition and scope," the definition of the Holocaust in the very first line of this article contradicts that of the article for The Holocaust. Whether or not the millions of non-Jewish people, such as gay men, the disabled, Romani etc. should be considered Holocaust victims is a point of contention even if there is broad historical consensus that they are people murdered by Nazi Germany. We do not need to identify the other groups as "Holocaust victims" as that is an academic debate in itself, nor excise their inclusion in the article if we just rename the article and make it clear that the Holocaust is mostly specifically used for the destruction of Jews. - (Discuss) – Stephen Kirk (handballer) → Stephen Kirk – Steve Kirk (disambiguation) currently lists only two articles: Steve Kirk and Stephen Kirk (handballer). Rather than using a pointless disambiguation page, it'd be much better to move Stephen Kirk (handballer) to Stephen Kirk and add an hatnote for each article saying "For the footballer/handballer, see Steve/Stephen Kirk". - (Discuss) – Pierre (disambiguation) → Pierre – No primary topic, although the name may be the origin of the city's name the city has 7,268 views though it could be somewhat discounted as US cities have the state in the title as common usage, The Pierre has 3,387, the song has 1,378, Pierre: or, The Ambiguities has 364, the penguin has 105 and the restaurant has 45 compared with only 2,280 for the name[[36]]. Also note that Frwiki has the DAB page at the base name so its unlikely that in English there is a primary topic and Plwiki has the city at the base name. In terms of usage its clear that the name isn't primary and while the name may be primary by long-term significance the city is a state capital so also has long-term significance especially in an encyclopedia. The article should probably be split to Pierre (given name) and Pierre (surname). Crouch, Swale (talk) 22:36, 18 December 2023 (UTC) — Relisting. Mattdaviesfsic (talk) 22:15, 28 December 2023 (UTC)
