"Here We Go... Again" is a song by the Canadian singer-songwriter the Weeknd, from his fifth studio album, Dawn FM (2022). It features the American rapper Tyler, the Creator and was written by the Weeknd alongside its producers Masamune "Rex" Kudo, Bruce Johnston, Brian Kennedy, Benny Bock, and Charlie Coffeen, with Tyler, the Creator and Christian Love receiving writing credits.

Background and release[edit]

Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys revealed to the Los Angeles Times that around six to eight months before the song's release, him and Christian Love went to producer Rex Kudo's house, who handed Johnston a microphone, and Johnston then sang with Kudo. A few days later, Kudo played Johnston's vocals for the Weeknd, who liked it, and eventually Johnston came in as a writer for the song. The Weeknd used some of the melodies and harmonies sung by Johnston and Christian Love in "Here We Go... Again".[1]

In an August 2021 interview with GQ, the Weeknd expressed interest in collaborating with Tyler, the Creator, stating, "I got mad love for Tyler, the Creator, and what he's doing right now — he's somebody that I really admire, because he wears his feelings on his sleeve."[2]

The Weeknd announced his fifth studio album, Dawn FM, on January 3, 2022, with Tyler, the Creator being revealed as a feature on the album.[3] The title of the song was then revealed alongside the tracklist for Dawn FM on January 5, 2022, before its official release alongside the album on January 7, 2022.[4]

Composition and lyrics[edit]

The song has been described as a soft-rock ballad.[1] According to the sheet music published by Kobalt Music Group at musicnotes.com, "Here We Go... Again" is written in the key of D-flat major and follows a tempo of 134 beats per minute. The vocals in the song span from F3 to C5.[5]

The Weeknd mentions the Canadian actress Neve Campbell in the song.

Ken Partridge of Genius described the first verse of the song as the Weeknd singing about his success, including his performance at the Super Bowl LV halftime show, but also has him sing about an ex-lover who has settled for someone the Weeknd describes as "basic" and "faceless", while the Weeknd claims that he "loved her right," and further claims that he made her "scream like Neve Campbell".[6][7] Tyler's verse has been described as simply echoing the Weeknd's thoughts, describing his skepticism of love, but is willing to marriage, only if his lover signs a prenuptial agreement.[7][8] Following the song's release, many people interpreted the Weeknd's verse to be about the American actress Angelina Jolie, due to the line, "My new girl, she a movie star".[9] The two were also spotted together numerous times throughout 2021.[10]

Commercial performance[edit]

Following the release of Dawn FM, "Here We Go... Again" entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 52 on the chart dated January 21, 2022, being the seventh highest charting track from the album.[11]
