ABOUT THE SHOW

For the past 13 years, the Passionate Eye has showcased a selection of the world's best, most creative, and provocative documentaries, two nights a week, 52 weeks a year.  The focus is primarily contemporary character driven stories dealing with political and social issues, provocative and often controversial stories that help Canadians better understand the world they live in and the issues they deal with closer to home. Recent award winners have included the Academy award-winning Born into Brothels, Sundance Film Festival hit Why We Fight, Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine, Peter Raymont's Shake Hands with the Devil, Ali Kazimi's Runaway Grooms, Mike Sheerin's Secret Mulroney Tapes, Ric Bienstock's Sex Slaves, to name just a few.

Due to the extraordinary success of The Passionate Eye on Newsworld, the program was also introduced to the CBC main channel for 3 years beginning in October 2003 with an additional selection of commissioned work from Canadian film makers. This season it returns for an exclusive run on CBC Newsworld.

The Passionate Eye Canadian Showcase on CBC & CBC Newsworld has received 4 Gemini nominations for Best documentary series.

Prior to being named the Governor General of Canada in 2005, Michaelle Jean hosted the series from her base in Montreal. Catherine Olsen (also a former host), is the Senior Programmer & Executive Producer of Documentaries for Newsworld.
