Eight cyclists race simultaneously over an obstacle course, jumping high into the air, with the winner being the first to cross the finish line

Block Pass
An overtaking move where the rider takes a curve on the inside, accelerating to come out of the bend in front

The rider who gets the best start is said to ‘get the holeshot’

To gain speed, riders use a ‘push-and-pump’ body action to jump over obstacles, landing smoothly on the descent

Course
The track is 300-400m long, full of jumps and tight corners.
Start
Riders build up speed at the start by going down a 8m ramp.
Format
In the Olympic Games, the BMX competition is in the 'supercross' format: each heat has eight riders, with the first four to cross the finish line going through to the next round, eventually to the final.
Bike
Smaller than a mountain bike, a BMX has 20-inch wheels and one gear, and must be robust enough to take on a lot of jumps.
Safety
With spectacular crashes a common sight in BMX, riders wear padded suits, crash helmets with chin guards and gloves.
