  • THE CUP RUNNETH OVER FOR DA SILVA
After he was the first to tee off at the Olympic Golf Course this morning, Brazil's Adilson da Silva said he felt the thrill of seeing his sport return to the Olympic Games after 112 years.

"It has been on my mind a lot," said da Silva, who wiped tears from his eyes after he shot a one-over-par 72. "It was a privilege and a huge responsibility. It's hard not to get emotional."

  • ROWING ROUNDUP: CROATIA'S FIRST TRIUMPH, GB SLIPS, AND SWITZERLAND GRABS GOLD AFTER 20 YEARS
The last three medal races of the day saw Poland win the women's double sculls, Croatia win the men's double sculls, and Switzerland win in the lightweight men's four final. Croat gold medallists and two-time world champions, Martin and Valent Sinkovic were elated with their country's first gold medal in rowing.

"We couldn't be happier. We managed to pull something special in the last 500 (metres) out of nowhere," Martin said. And on what their family will think is a playful joke, Valent added, "I think we are coming home in 12 days and my father will still be drunk."

In the women's double sculls, Katherine Grainger and Victoria Thornley Great Britain were unable to defend their title from London 2012. "There's always a sense of what might have been," Grainger said. But the rower told Olympic News Service that they are still delighted with the silver. "For many many days nobody thought we'd come back with anything. I don't like leaving empty-handed. It feels pretty nice to walk away from this one with another shiny medal in my pocket."

Switzerland's victory in the lightweight men's four was the country's first gold medal in rowing since Atlanta 1996.
