Updates

In Broadcasting Circular 2007-7, Administrative changes to broadcasting industry data collection, dated 18 October 2007, the CRTC set out the process for the transition to web-based filing of data gathered by paper-based filings. Starting in 2008, selected licensees were required to file their broadcasting data electronically. For 2010 reporting period, electronic filing has been expanded to include most licensees that will submit its broadcasting undertakings' annual return(s) and related statements using the web-based Data Collection System (DCS).

Telecom Circular 2007-17, 18 October 2007 provided notice of administrative changes regarding the collection of telecommunications data. The Commission also provided notice that Statistics Canada and the Commission will gradually harmonize their separate data collection processes so as to further reduce the data collection burden on the telecommunications industry.

As a result of Telecom Circular 2007-17, a number of changes have been made to the forms in the annual telecommunications survey. These changes integrate the extra data requirements for Statistics Canada, simplify reporting requirements and capture new information as the telecommunications industry continues to evolve. As a result, the following two paper-based surveys will now be collected as part of the Annual Telecommunications Survey.

  • Annual Survey of Telecommunications – SDDS no. 2722
  • Annual Survey of Internet Service Providers – SDDS no. 4303

The net result of the integration of the CRTC and Statistics Canada telecommunications data collection is to reduce the burden on the industry as well as facilitating the filing of data electronically.
