Divisions

The department is separated into four sections: Corporate Management, Economic Development, Community Operations and Transportation

 

Corporate Management

Directorate

The Directorate is responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of the department through the offices of the Deputy Minister, Associate Deputy Minister and Assistant Deputy Ministers. The Directorate also oversees the implementation of Sivumut Abluqta, Stepping Forward Together 2014-2018, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and other Government of Nunavut strategies.


Corporate and Administrative Services

The Corporate and Administrative Services division provides executive administrative support to the Deputy Minister, Associate Deputy Minister and the Assistant Deputy Ministers. It is also responsible for providing administrative and office management services for ED&T headquarters.


Finance and Administration

The Finance and Administration division oversees financial planning, training and development, administrative, financial and human resource management for the department.


Policy, Planning, and Communications Division

The Policy, Planning, and Communications division undertakes policy development, provides planning support and advice, and effective internal and external communications for the department.


Nunavummi Nangminiqaqtunik Ikajuuti (NNI) Secretariat

The NNI Secretariat is responsible for the facilitation, co-ordination and implementation of the NNI policy and is the chief advocate for this policy in the Government of Nunavut. The goal of the NNI policy is to ensure and promote long-term economic development in Nunavut by maximizing the participation of Nunavut residents, with the focus on Inuit, both in the general workforce and on government funded projects.

 

Economic Development

Tourism & Cultural Industries

The Tourism & Cultural Industries Division works with Nunavummiut to develop strong and sustainable tourism and cultural sectors throughout Nunavut. The division provides information and advice to businesses; supports community organizations, non-governmental organizations and sector associations; and manages implementation of the Government of Nunavut’s arts & crafts and tourism development strategies.


Minerals and Petroleum Resources

The Minerals and Petroleum Resources Division is committed to building a sustainable resource exploration and development sector across the territory. The division promotes the development of an effective regulatory regime, manages the mineral and mining strategy and develops programs that build capacity in communities to positively benefit from resource exploration and development. The division works to develop the sector by supporting geoscience and by training and funding community-based prospectors to promote investor confidence in Nunavut. It also coordinates the three regional Socio-Economic Monitoring Committees in the territory.

 

Community Operations

Community Operations is responsible for overall program implementation and financial management, and administrative services in the four regional operations offices located in Kugluktuk, Rankin Inlet, Pangnirtung and Pond Inlet. Community Operations ensure departmental programs are delivered and administered to meet the specific needs of each region and their communities. The division also oversee regional transportation activities and business development services.

The Kitikmeot Community Operations office in Kugluktuk serves Cambridge Bay, Gjoa Haven, Kugluktuk, Kugaaruk and Taloyoak.

The Kivalliq Community Operations office in Rankin Inlet serves Arviat, Baker Lake, Chesterfield Inlet, Coral Harbour, Rankin Inlet, Repulse Bay and Whale Cove.

The North Baffin Community Operations office in Pond Inlet serves the communities of Arctic Bay, Clyde River, Grise Fiord, Hall Beach, Igloolik, Pond Inlet, and Resolute Bay.

The South Baffin Community Operations Office in Pangnirtung serves the communities of Cape Dorset, Iqaluit, Kimmirut, Pangnirtung, Qikiqtarjuaq, and Sanikiluaq.

 

Transportation

Motor Vehicles Division

The Motor Vehicles Division is responsible for road safety, driver testing, licensing and records, registering and inspection of motor vehicles, issuing identification cards and maintaining the motor vehicle accident database.


Transportation Policy & Planning Division

The Transportation Policy & Planning division is responsible for planning road, marine and air infrastructure for Nunavut. The division also serves as an advocate for Nunavut's unique needs in federal government transportation policy activities. The division is directly responsible for managing the transportation strategy and several federal-funded programs including the Strategic Highway Infrastructure Program. It also oversees the Canadian Coast Guard Remote Resupply Sites Memorandum of Understanding.


Iqaluit International Airport Division

The Iqaluit International Airport Division is responsible for the safe, efficient and effective management and operation of the Iqaluit Airport. This airport is designated by Transport Canada as a National Airport System facility. Iqaluit International Airport serves a vital role in supporting air transportation in Nunavut, trans-Atlantic air navigation, polar routes and North American Air Defense. The airport is an operational base for specialized activities such as medical evacuations, aerial surveillance, cold weather testing and military servicing and refueling.


Nunavut Airports Division

The Nunavut Airports Division is responsible for the safe, efficient and effective management and operation of airports in Nunavut. The division ensures that the facilities, Community Aerodrome Radio Station staff and equipment meet or exceed federal standards. This involves a close working relationship with Transport Canada as well as community governments that are contracted to operate and maintain airports.
