Wikipedia:Requests for history merge
This page is used for listing requests for history merges or history splitting of pages. For relatively simple cases where history merge is required, the destination page should be tagged with the {{history merge}} template. This page should be used for requesting very complex merges, merges involving more than two pages, history merges of deleted pages, or when the use of the template is otherwise inadequate or where its usage would cause problems.
This page was originally for listing cut-and-paste moves which could not be repaired due to a then-extant technical limitation. The limitation has since been removed, but this page is still available if you find a cut-and-paste move, and are not able to repair it yourself (there is a procedure for doing it, but only administrators can do it, and it is a bit tricky!).
Administrators need to read Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Fixing cut-and-paste moves and Wikipedia:Requested moves/Closing instructions.
The procedure[edit]
- If the issue is clear-cut (straight-forward cut-and-paste move(s) to a different title), place a
{{history merge|NAME OF PAGE THE ARTICLE WAS CUT FROM}}
template at the new location of the article which has been moved through cut and pasting, i.e. on the article where the pasting was done. This will place the request in Category:Candidates for history merging to be reviewed. - In more complex cases (explained at Wikipedia:How to fix cut-and-paste moves), please leave a description of the problem under the "Repair requests" section. An administrator will look over the pages and perform whatever tasks are necessary and update the request.
- Tasks that have been completed or do not need further discussion will be removed.

- Please reverse histmerge Template:COVID-19 pandemic data/styles.css into Template:COVID-19 pandemic data/styles2.css (see Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2023 December 26#Template:COVID-19 pandemic data/styles.css). Thanks! HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 22:19, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- HouseBlaster, there has not been a histmerge? Primefac (talk) 12:37, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
- Pppery had said that the two should be histmerged before deleted ("reverse" meaning the history should end up at Template:COVID-19 pandemic data/styles.css even though it is the older page), but now I am not sure what could/should be histmerged given v2 was copied from was Template:COVID-19 pandemic data/sandbox/styles.css. User:Pppery, would you be able to clarify what you meant? I am guessing there is something obvious I am missing... HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 01:16, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
- Template:COVID-19 pandemic data/sandbox/styles.css can be ignored here as it's the usual way template sandboxes work. The creation of Template:COVID-19 pandemic data/styles2.css was based on Template:COVID-19 pandemic data/styles.css (indirectly) and since the former page is about to be deleted per a TfD the history should be preserved at the latter page, which can then be moved to the simpler title. Template:COVID-19 pandemic data/sandbox/styles.css and Template:COVID-19 pandemic data/sandbox/styles2.css likewise should be histmerged, for the same reason. I have no idea what Primefac is referring to above. The only reason I haven't done any of this myself is that I'm INVOLVED in this situation so should not use my own tools. * Pppery * it has begun... 02:52, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
- I read the request as "please reverse (the) histmerge..." I disagree with the need to histmerge - from the TFD it sounds like the "2" version was created based on but not directly copied from the original; it's a new version and thus the old version is unnecessary. If someone wants to keep that history they can move it to an /old subpage or similar. Primefac (talk) 07:31, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
