Canada and Sub-Saharan Africa
Canada has cultivated relationships in Africa for more than five decades, working with African countries, as well as with regional and international bodies, to improve development outcomes; promote democracy, governance, human rights and the rule of law; enhance African peace and security and make the most of commercial opportunities.
Canada’s priorities in Africa include:
- Supporting international development initiatives that focus on improving the future of children and youth, increasing food security, and enhancing sustainable economic growth
- Promoting democracy, governance, human rights and the rule of law
- Promoting peace and security, including enhancing the capacity of African countries and regional organizations to counter terrorism and crime
- Engaging in commercial activities arising from Africa’s economic growth and policy reforms
