On February 22, 2017, President Michael Binder gave a presentation to members of the Canadian Association of Nuclear Host Communities at their annual general meeting in Ottawa, ON. The presentation provided an overview of the CNSC's regulatory responsibilities, updates on nuclear power plants, Canadian uranium projects and waste management, as well as a discussion of emergency preparedness and the CNSC's public outreach.

Presentation by Ramzi Jammal at the Nuclear Energy Agency Workshop: Multilateral Cooperation in the Regulatory Reviews of Small Modular Reactors

On August 10, 2017, Ramzi Jammal, CNSC Executive Vice-President and Chief Regulatory Operations Officer, presented to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Office for Nuclear Regulation and the Nuclear Energy Agency in Ottawa, Ontario. The presentation, titled "Readiness for Regulating Small Modular Reactors", discussed the CNSC’s current regulatory framework, strategies for regulatory readiness and current vendor design reviews.

Presentation by Ramzi Jammal at the Joint Convention Officers’ Workshop

On July 18, 2017, Ramzi Jammal, CNSC Executive Vice-President and Chief Regulatory Operations Officer, shared his experiences as President of the 7th Review Meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS) with the Officers of the 6th Review Meeting of the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management. He spoke specifically about work done to increase participation at the 7th Review Meeting of the CNS and his efforts to increase openness and transparency of the review process. He also discussed the introduction of the concept of "Areas of Good Performance", which was used for the first time at the 7th Review Meeting.

On July 13, 2017, Lisa Thiele, CNSC Senior General Counsel, gave a presentation at the 2017 World Nuclear University Summer Institute in Uppsala, Sweden. The presentation, titled "Introduction to Nuclear Law" covered the essential components and principles of national and international nuclear law, addressed the role of regulatory bodies and provided an overview of the CNSC’s regulatory approach.

On June 17, 2017, Jason Cameron, Vice-President and Chief Communications Officer, Regulatory Affairs Branch, participated in a panel discussion and presented at the Your Energy Future Calgary Study Tour in Calgary, Alberta. Your Energy Future, which focuses on regulating energy in Canada, is a national policy engagement and leadership development program delivered by the Public Policy Forum in partnership with Action Canada. The presentation gave an overview of the CNSC, what makes the organization a unique regulator in Canada and challenges unique to nuclear regulation.

On June 5, 2017, Jason Cameron, CNSC Vice-President and Chief Communications Officer, delivered a presentation on behalf of Ramzi Jammal at the 37th Annual Conference of the Canadian Nuclear Society in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The presentation, titled "The Canadian Approach to Effective Safety and Security Interfacing", discusses the importance placed on safety and security interfaces in Canada while recognizing the societal benefits arising from the safe and secure use of sealed sources. Mr. Cameron also highlights Canadian good practices that were identified by the International Atomic Energy Agency during a recent International Physical Protection Advisory Service mission.

On May 30, 2017, Lisa Thiele, CNSC Senior General Counsel, took part in a panel discussion at the Council of Canadian Administrative Tribunals' Annual Symposium in Vancouver, BC. The subject of the roundtable discussion was "Promoting Tribunal Neutrality in an Integrated Regulatory Model" and panellists addressed the importance of demonstrating neutrality in regulatory adjudicative processes.

On May 18, 2017, Ramzi Jammal, CNSC Executive Vice-President and Chief Regulatory Operations Officer, delivered a presentation to the International Nuclear Regulators Association (INRA) in Chicago, IL. The “Canadian update” to fellow INRA members provided information on a range of topics, including recent and upcoming CNSC licensing and regulatory activities, long-term waste management, and government reviews and decisions.

On May 17, 2017, Ramzi Jammal, CNSC Executive Vice-President and Chief Regulatory Operations Officer, in his capacity as the President of the Seventh Review Meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety, delivered a presentation at the 40th International Nuclear Regulators Association meeting in Chicago, IL. The presentation, titled “Convention on Nuclear Safety: Outcomes of the Seventh Review Meeting”, discusses the major outcomes and successes of the recent review meeting including key achievements and improvements from past review meetings such as increased participation and transparency. Mr. Jammal also noted further work to be done leading up to the next review meeting in 2020.

The presentation, titled "Some Current Legal Issues – a Regulatory Perspective" reviewed recent legal developments in Canada, and addressed some current legal issues such as the implementation in Canada of the principles of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, global accountability for nuclear safety and readiness for new technologies.

On January 9, 2017, Terry Jamieson, CNSC Vice-President, Technical Support Branch, delivered a presentation titled “Issues and Challenges in Radiation Protection in Canada: A Status Update” at the 2017 International Information System on Occupational Exposure ALARA Symposium in Ft. Lauderdale, U.S. In his presentation, Mr. Jamieson outlined the current state of Canadian nuclear power reactors, provided a summary of the Canadian regulatory process for refurbishment and life extension together with some examples of regulatory lessons-learned from past refurbishments, and commented on Canadian involvement and support of the ISOE Network.

Regulatory Oversight of Major Decommissioning Projects under the Canadian GoCo Model

On March 7, 2017, André Régimbald, Strategic Advisor in the Directorate of Nuclear Cycle and Facilities Regulation, gave a presentation as part of a panel discussion at Waste Management Symposium 2017 in Phoenix, Arizona (USA). The presentation focused on the regulatory oversight of Canadian Nuclear Laboratories' (CNL) major decommissioning projects under the Canadian Government-owned Contractor-operated (GoCo) model, outlining the regulatory framework, the CNSC' regulatory review capacity, the delivery of results and stakeholder engagement related to these projects.
